Observability for Mobile APIs
Measure what users experience: per-version metrics, client traces and crash correlation.
Server dashboards hide mobile pain. Track latency and error rates per app version, platform, network type and region, propagate trace context from the app (W3C traceparent) so slow screens link to backend spans, and correlate crash reports with API errors. Watch sync health: outbox depth, resync rate, conflict rate. Use RUM (real user monitoring) via OpenTelemetry mobile SDKs or vendor tools.
Mobile-aware signals
| Signal | Source | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| p95 latency by app version | API logs (User-Agent) | Regressions in one release |
| Error rate by platform | API + client | Platform-specific breakages |
| Screen load time | Client RUM | What users actually feel |
| Crash-free sessions | Crash reporting | Stability per release |
| Sync conflict / resync rate | Sync service | Offline design health |
| Push delivery & open rate | Push provider | Notification effectiveness |

Common pitfalls
- Averages that hide old-version or cellular-only problems.
- No way to link a user's bug report to server logs.
- Logging personal data in client telemetry.
Key points
- Segment metrics by version/platform/network
- Propagate trace context from the app
- Track sync health

Practice questions
Why segment API metrics by app version?
Answer
A regression in one release (or an old version hitting a changed endpoint) is hidden in global averages but obvious per version.
How can a mobile app's slow screen be linked to backend latency?
Answer
Propagate W3C trace context (traceparent) from the app's request so client spans and server spans share a trace ID.
